BPC 157 is a fifteen-residue synthetic peptide with the sequence Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val. The name is an abbreviation of "body protection compound", the label the Zagreb group that first described it gave to a protein fraction from human gastric juice; 157 is the fragment number, not a lot or a strength. The same molecule turns up in listings as BPC-157, BPC157, bpc 157 peptide, pentadecapeptide BPC 157 and, occasionally, under the older name Bepecin. All of those are one sequence. What is not the same molecule is "BPC 157 arginate", a salt form some sellers market as a distinct product; it is the same peptide paired with arginine as the counter-ion, and a certificate for it must still confirm the peptide by mass.
It matters that this is a linear peptide with no disulfide bridge and no unusual residues. That makes it cheap to make by solid-phase synthesis, which is why it is one of the most listed research peptides on the internet and why the spread in quality between sellers is so wide. A fifteen-residue synthesis with three consecutive prolines produces deletion sequences (a chain missing one proline) that run close to the main peak on HPLC and are only caught by a laboratory that reports the mass of the main peak, not just its area. Sellers who quote purity from a single unlabelled chromatogram are, whether they know it or not, quoting the wrong number.
Almost everything published on BPC 157 is animal or cell-culture work, and the mechanism is not settled; the papers cited at the foot of this page describe effects on blood-vessel signalling in cells and rodents. The figure is only interpretable with its method beside it (column, gradient, detection wavelength) and a date, which is what ICH Q2(R2) means when it asks that an analytical procedure be shown fit for its purpose. A percentage with no method and no date is a number somebody typed, and a certificate that carries every test but for a different lot number than the vial is the most common failure of all and the easiest to catch. For BPC 157 the first thing to read on a certificate is the observed mass. The peptide has a monoisotopic mass of 1418.704 Da, so an electrospray spectrum shows the doubly charged ion near m/z 710.4 and the triply charged near m/z 473.9; a laboratory that deconvolutes the spectrum will print a value within a fraction of a dalton of 1418.7, or 1419.5 if it reports the average mass. A certificate that prints "identity: conforms" with no spectrum and no number has not shown you identity. A certificate that prints a mass a proline short (about 1321.7 Da) has identified a deletion product, and a chromatogram that shows a shoulder on the main peak is often that product at a few percent.
The second thing to read is the counter-ion. BPC 157 is supplied as the acetate or, less often, the trifluoroacetate left over from purification. Trifluoroacetate is not a purity problem for the peptide itself, but it changes the net content: a vial labelled 5 mg that is 5 mg of peptide-plus-TFA contains less peptide than one that is 5 mg of acetate salt, and a certificate that reports net peptide content by amino acid analysis or by quantitative HPLC against a standard settles the question. Ask for that line specifically. Sellers who cannot say which salt they ship are usually reading a certificate that a factory wrote for a different lot.
Where to buy BPC 157: five checks before you order from anyone
Every seller of bpc 157 peptide says "third-party tested". The phrase costs nothing. These five checks take about four minutes per listing and separate a tested lot from a tested-sounding one.

- Net content is stated in milligrams. The label size is a claim; the certificate's net content is the measurement. If the certificate has no net content line, the purity figure describes the powder, not the vial, and the price per mg you calculated is fiction.
How listings for BPC 157 specifically mislead:
- The words "BPC 157 peptide 99% purity" with no lot, no method and no date. The number describes a chromatogram somebody once ran; without a lot it cannot be tied to the vial in the listing.
- "Arginate" sold as a different, better product. It is the same fifteen-residue sequence with a different counter-ion, and the certificate must still show the peptide mass and a net content that accounts for the salt.
- A certificate that shows an HPLC trace but no mass spectrum. Purity without identity is meaningless for a peptide whose deletion sequences run close to the main peak; the trace can look clean and still be the wrong molecule.
- "Pharmaceutical grade" or "USP grade" BPC 157. There is no USP monograph for BPC 157, so no lot can conform to one. The phrase tells you the seller either does not know that or hopes you do not.

The FDA put BPC 157 in Category 2 of its 503A bulk drug substances list, the group of substances that may carry significant safety risks, in its update of 29 September 2023. In April 2026 the FDA took it out of Category 2 after the nomination behind it was withdrawn.
