Melanotan II is a ring-shaped relative of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone and, unlike bremelanotide, it switches on melanocortin receptors broadly: MC1R, MC3R, MC4R and MC5R. Switching on MC1R in pigment cells pushes them toward making the darker kind of pigment, which is the tanning effect the compound is known for. Switching on MC3R and MC4R in the brain accounts for the appetite and sexual effects reported alongside it. Those are not side effects of a tanning agent.
