Selank is a seven-building-block peptide built on tuftsin, a four-building-block immune peptide that comes from part of an antibody, with the same three-building-block tail used in Semax to stop enzymes cutting it up. The two compounds come from the same program and share that trick. The claim that sets Selank apart is that its reported effects look like those of benzodiazepines without it binding where benzodiazepines bind.
Rather than sitting on the GABA-A receptor and tuning it directly, it appears to change how much the genes for GABA signalling are switched on. That is a different kind of mechanism with a different time course, and it is the proposed reason the compound is described as not sedating and not habit-forming. It is registered and prescribed in Russia and approved nowhere else.

Open questions. The gene work establishes that Selank changes the activity of GABA-related genes and that the pattern resembles GABA’s own. It does not establish that this is how any behavioral effect happens, and the authors are careful about that. The behavioral evidence is in rodents, uses avoidance tasks, and was strongest in animals picked for being poor learners to begin with, which argues against generalising it.
The claim most often attached to this compound, that it calms anxiety without benzodiazepine drawbacks, rests largely on Russian clinical work that is hard to judge from outside: much of it is not in English, and a large share comes from the institute that developed the compound. That is a reason for caution about how strong the evidence is, not a claim the work is wrong. No regulator outside Russia has assessed it.
