In short

Glutathione is a tripeptide, gamma-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine — note the unusual gamma peptide bond at the glutamate, which is not a standard alpha linkage (formula C10H17N3O6S, average mass 307.33 g/mol, CAS 70-18-8). Glutathione is sold here for laboratory research in 1 size (1500mg), from $55.00 a vial. It is not an FDA-approved medicine. Research use only, and never for people or animals.

What is Glutathione, and what is it used for?

Glutathione is also listed and searched as L-glutathione peptide, reduced glutathione, glutathione tripeptide. They all mean the same compound. Supplier lists write it as Glutathione peptides or peptide Glutathione as well; every one of those is this record. A name is not a test, which is why the lot record further down counts for more than the wording on a label.

Chemically: molecular formula C10H17N3O6S, average mass 307.33 g/mol (PubChem CID 124886). Those figures are what the identity test on a certificate is read against.

Class

A tripeptide, gamma-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine — note the unusual gamma peptide bond at the glutamate, which is not a standard alpha linkage.

Mechanism

The most abundant non-protein thiol in mammalian tissue. Functions as the principal intracellular redox buffer, a determinant of redox signalling, and a substrate for detoxification of xenobiotics via glutathione S-transferases. It is synthesised inside cells in two ATP-dependent steps, not taken up intact.

Where it appears in the literature

Oxidative stress, redox signalling, detoxification, and the regulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis, immune function and fibrogenesis. An enormous biochemical literature.

What is not established

That supplying glutathione from outside a cell raises glutathione inside it. Synthesis is intracellular and rate-limited by cysteine availability and glutamate cysteine ligase activity, neither of which is addressed by adding the finished tripeptide.

Glutathione for sale: 1500mg vials, price per mg

Glutathione is sold in 1 size here, 1500mg, from $55.00 a vial. Every way of buying is in the table; the per-mg figure under each price is the one that compares across sizes.

Volume tiers are per size and do not combine across sizes (see bulk pricing). Subscribe & Save takes 6% every month, 4% every 2 months or 2% every 3 months off from shipment 2, two shipments minimum, and stacks on the volume tier: the lowest this record ever bills is $0.03 per mg, twenty 1500mg vials on a monthly subscription from shipment 2 onward.

Where to buy Glutathione: what to check before you order from anyone

Glutathione for sale, or Glutathione peptide for sale, means this page: one record, 1 size. You can buy Glutathione online here with guest checkout; verified in-stock orders placed before 12 PM Pacific are dispatched the same day.

Before ordering Glutathione from anyone, us included, run the 5 checks on verifying a certificate; the first is that the report resolves on the laboratory's own site, and a seller who cannot pass them is asking for the trust a certificate exists to replace.

Glutathione guides and documentation

Written to answer the questions that come up around Glutathione specifically, what its paperwork should show, how it is handled, and how to judge a supplier selling it.

The full library, grouped by what you came to answer, is in the laboratory guides.

The Glutathione certificate: lot, purity, identity, and how to verify it

A certificate answers identity, purity and net content as three separate questions, each with the method that produced it and the date it was run, how to read one covers what each field does and does not cover. For Glutathione that means a mass spectrum landing on 307.33 g/mol for C10H17N3O6S, the figure published against PubChem CID 124886.

Glutathione research: what the published studies examine

Status: No FDA-approved application. This compound is sold as laboratory material. Where research on it has been published, it sits at the animal, cell or early-human stage, and this record does not summarize what it found. A supplier is not a neutral judge of evidence about its own catalog.

Glutathione is a tripeptide but an atypical one: the bond between glutamate and cysteine is a gamma linkage through the glutamate side chain rather than the usual alpha peptide bond, which is precisely what makes it resistant to ordinary peptidases and allows it to persist intracellularly. It is the most abundant non-protein thiol in mammalian tissue and functions as the cell's principal redox buffer, as a determinant of redox signalling, and as the conjugating substrate for detoxification of xenobiotics.

The point that governs everything else about it as a product is where it is made. Biosynthesis occurs in the CYTOSOL in a tightly regulated two-step process: glutamate cysteine ligase, the rate-limiting enzyme, then glutathione synthetase. The key determinants of how much a cell has are the availability of cysteine — the sulfur amino acid precursor — and the activity of that rate-limiting enzyme. Neither is a function of how much intact glutathione is present outside the cell.

Glutathione is the most abundant non-protein thiol in mammalian tissue, a key determinant of redox signalling, vital in xenobiotic detoxification, and a regulator of cell proliferation, apoptosis, immune function and fibrogenesis. Biosynthesis occurs in the cytosol in a tightly regulated manner, with the key determinants being availability of the sulfur amino acid precursor cysteine and the activity of the rate-limiting enzyme glutamate cysteine ligase, composed of catalytic and modifier subunits. Open questions. The biochemistry is textbook and not in dispute. The commercially relevant question is one the biochemistry answers unfavourably: glutathione is synthesised inside cells, its production is rate-limited by cysteine supply and by glutamate cysteine ligase activity, and the tripeptide is not simply taken up intact from outside in useful quantities. That is the same structural problem the NAD+ entry on this catalog describes, and it has the same practical implication — the sensible interventions in this pathway target precursor availability or enzyme activity rather than supplying the finished molecule.

Anyone comparing products in this category should ask what is actually being supplied and by what route it is supposed to reach the cytosol. Note also that glutathione is a thiol and oxidises readily to its disulphide form, so the ratio of reduced to oxidised material in a given lot is a real analytical question that a single purity figure does not answer.

Each row above describes an observation in the stated model. None of it describes what Glutathione would do in a person or an animal outside that model, and none of it is a recommendation to use it for anything.

How to store Glutathione: refrigeration and shelf life

Keep the sealed vial cold and out of the light and it stays as it left the lab. Once it is mixed into a solution, how long it holds up depends on the compound, what it was mixed with, how strong the solution is and how cold it is kept — too many variables for anyone to print one shelf life on a label. So laboratories write the date on whatever they prepare and keep their own record of it.

For solution preparation arithmetic on the bench, concentration, per-graduation values and molarity, use the vial concentration calculator, which opens with the Glutathione sizes stocked here already loaded. It covers laboratory measurement only and contains no administration guidance.

How does Glutathione work, and what does it do?

At the level the published literature describes it, the most abundant non-protein thiol in mammalian tissue. That supplying glutathione from outside a cell raises glutathione inside it. Synthesis is intracellular and rate-limited by cysteine availability and glutamate cysteine ligase activity, neither of which is addressed by adding the finished tripeptide. This record sells it for laboratory work and says nothing about use in a person or an animal.

How do I verify a Glutathione certificate of analysis is real?

Check it at the issuing laboratory, not with us: a real report carries a verification key or QR that resolves on the lab's own site, and one with no key is worthless. Reading a certificate covers the rest. For Glutathione the identity result should land on 307.33 g/mol for C10H17N3O6S; a report whose mass is not that is either a different compound or a different form of it.
