What is GDF-8?

GDF-8 is also listed and searched as GDF 8 peptide, myostatin (GDF-8), GDF-8 protein. They all mean the same compound. Supplier lists write it as GDF-8 peptides as well; every one of those is this record. A name is not a test, which is why the lot record further down counts for more than the wording on a label.

Class

Growth/differentiation factor 8, also called myostatin — a member of the TGF-beta superfamily.

Mechanism

A secreted negative regulator of skeletal muscle growth, expressed specifically in developing and adult skeletal muscle, signalling through activin type II receptors.

Where it appears in the literature

Extensively characterized as a target for inhibition in muscle-wasting conditions. Note the direction: the research interest is in blocking GDF-8, not in supplying it.

What is not established

No approved product. Every therapeutic program in this area has aimed at inhibiting this protein rather than administering it, and inhibitor programs have repeatedly stopped for safety.

GDF-8 for sale: 1mg vials, price per mg

GDF-8 is sold in 1 size here, 1mg, from $155.00 a vial. Every way of buying is in the table; the per-mg figure under each price is the one that compares across sizes.

Volume tiers are per size and do not combine across sizes (see bulk pricing). Subscribe & Save takes 6% every month, 4% every 2 months or 2% every 3 months off from shipment 2, two shipments minimum, and stacks on the volume tier: the lowest this record ever bills is $123.84 per mg, twenty 1mg vials on a monthly subscription from shipment 2 onward.

Where to buy GDF-8: what to check before you order from anyone

GDF-8 for sale, or GDF-8 peptide for sale, means this page: one record, 1 size. You can buy GDF-8 online here with guest checkout; verified in-stock orders placed before 12 PM Pacific are dispatched the same day.

Before ordering GDF-8 from anyone, us included, run the 5 checks on verifying a certificate; the first is that the report resolves on the laboratory's own site, and a seller who cannot pass them is asking for the trust a certificate exists to replace.

GDF-8 guides and documentation

Written to answer the questions that come up around GDF-8 specifically, what its paperwork should show, how it is handled, and how to judge a supplier selling it.

The full library, grouped by what you came to answer, is in the laboratory guides.

The GDF-8 certificate: lot, purity, identity, and how to verify it

A certificate answers identity, purity and net content as three separate questions, each with the method that produced it and the date it was run, how to read one covers what each field does and does not cover. This product is myostatin itself, produced recombinantly. UniProt O14793 is the human protein; a recombinant preparation may differ from the full-length native sequence, and the lot certificate states what was made. So the mass on the lot certificate is the one to read; a listing that quotes the published figure for this material is quoting the wrong molecule.

GDF-8 certificates post here and in the certificate index when Kovera Labs reports on the lot.

GDF-8 research: what the published studies examine

Status: No FDA-approved application. This compound is sold as laboratory material. Where research on it has been published, it sits at the animal, cell or early-human stage, and this record does not summarize what it found. A supplier is not a neutral judge of evidence about its own catalog.

GDF-8 is myostatin, and the most important thing to understand about it is the direction of the biology. It is a NEGATIVE regulator of skeletal muscle growth: mice with the gene disrupted are significantly larger than wild-type with a widespread increase in muscle mass, individual muscles weighing two to three times more, through a combination of hyperplasia and hypertrophy. The naturally occurring double-muscled phenotypes in certain cattle breeds arise from the same loss of function.

Consequently the entire therapeutic literature concerns INHIBITING this protein — with soluble receptor decoys, antibodies and propeptides — and not administering it. A vial of GDF-8 is the ligand whose removal produces the phenotype the compound is often marketed alongside, which is a point of confusion worth resolving before purchase rather than after.

GDF-8: reported findings and the model each came from
Reported observationModelSource
GDF-8 was identified by degenerate PCR as a TGF-beta family member expressed specifically in developing and adult skeletal muscle, restricted early to the myotome compartment of developing somites. Mice with the gene disrupted by targeting were significantly larger than wild-type with a large widespread increase in skeletal muscle mass, individual muscles weighing two to three times more, resulting from combined muscle cell hyperplasia and hypertrophy. The authors conclude GDF-8 functions specifically as a negative regulator of skeletal muscle growth.gene targeting in mice, in situ hybridisation, and cloningMcPherron, Lawler and Lee, Regulation of skeletal muscle mass in mice by a new TGF-beta superfamily member, Nature (1997)The founding paper for the entire myostatin field. Note the effect comes from REMOVING the protein.

Open questions. The biology is well established and unusually clean for this catalog — a knockout phenotype, a matching natural phenotype in cattle, and a defined receptor pathway. The open question is not scientific but one of purpose: it is difficult to state a coherent research rationale for supplying a protein whose characterized role is to suppress muscle growth, and anyone buying it should be clear about which direction they intend.

The therapeutic literature runs the other way, toward inhibitors, and the record there is cautionary rather than encouraging — see the ACE-031 entry on this catalog, whose trial was stopped over non-muscle adverse events. There is no approved product on either side of this target.

Each row above describes an observation in the stated model. None of it describes what GDF-8 would do in a person or an animal outside that model, and none of it is a recommendation to use it for anything.

How to store GDF-8: refrigeration and shelf life

Keep the sealed vial cold and out of the light and it stays as it left the lab. Once it is mixed into a solution, how long it holds up depends on the compound, what it was mixed with, how strong the solution is and how cold it is kept — too many variables for anyone to print one shelf life on a label. So laboratories write the date on whatever they prepare and keep their own record of it.

For solution preparation arithmetic on the bench, concentration, per-graduation values and molarity, use the vial concentration calculator, which opens with the GDF-8 sizes stocked here already loaded. It covers laboratory measurement only and contains no administration guidance.
