It is a NEGATIVE regulator of skeletal muscle growth: mice with the gene disrupted are significantly larger than wild-type with a widespread increase in muscle mass, individual muscles weighing two to three times more, through a combination of hyperplasia and hypertrophy. The naturally occurring double-muscled phenotypes in certain cattle breeds arise from the same loss of function.
Consequently the entire therapeutic literature concerns INHIBITING this protein — with soluble receptor decoys, antibodies and propeptides — and not administering it.
